Reading and Posting
1. Can I create my own Topics?
Certainly. You need a valid forums account, which requires a valid login. Once you have that, you’re all set, although you might want to read around for a while first and get used to the style of the particular board you’re perusing.
2. No one’s responding to my topics!
Yes, the nature of the forums is such that sometimes topics just don’t draw any attention. Rather than complaining or repeating the same topic, it might be wise to investigate what might have caused your topic to go unnoticed. Was the wording of the subject poor? Generally a good subject line that explains exactly what the topic is about (such as: “Thoughts about the 2010 Camaro”) will gain far more views than a topic with a poor or confusing label (such as: “HL2 BUGZ! LOLO ROX0R!”).
Couple this with a well-written, well-thought-out post, and you’re usually golden!
3. Can I include images in my post?
It depends on whether the board owner has enabled this feature. If he/she has, you should see a little “picture” icon when you go to make a new post. Click on it and enter the URL for the image you want to include.
If you don’t see the image icon, then it means this feature has been disabled and you can’t post images.
Behavior
1. This guy’s a jerk. A jerk I say! Can I call him a jerk?
Our policy is to expect forum users to take the high road whenever possible, and ignore anyone who is breaking rules, acting like a jerk, or otherwise causing a disturbance. If the person is causing a significant disruption, you can always report that person to a moderator or admin. Simply retaliating will just devolve the discussion further, and then when a moderator gets involved, both people will end up in trouble.
2. Someone else made a topic on a subject, and I want to reply, but I want everyone to pay attention, so can I make my own topic about it?
It’s best if you don’t. Generally, making a new topic solely to reply to someone else’s topic is frowned upon, and such topics are likely to be closed. If you have a “spin-off” thread, that may be a different story. For example, if the original topic is “What’s your favorite Camaro of all time”, and that leads you to think of an idea for a new topic, such as “What engine would you want in your favorite Camaro?” then that’s quite acceptable.
Moderators and Admins
1. What are moderators?
Moderators have power over individual sections of a Forum. Within those sections, they are capable of editing, deleting, and closing topics, not to mention banning users who are disruptive. Each section usually has between two and eight moderators.
2. Okay, so what are Admins?
Admins are like uber-moderators. They have control over an entire forum. They have all the abilities of a moderator, but can also change the moderators, and the board’s look and settings. There aren’t many of these folks.
3. What If I Disagree With A Moderator?
Moderators are not perfect and are only human. Disagreements occur. Try to communicate with them first on a respectful level and settle your disagreement. They are not targets for your obscenities, flames or general insults. If you do not agree with a decision, you are not entitled to start a thread arguing about the verdict or flaming any of the moderators. Any such messages will be removed. This extends to Private Messages and unban requests as well, and you are not entitled to insult moderators via either of these methods. Also note that bans are between the user banned and the moderators, and moderators cannot respond about bans publicly. Any correspondence about ban length and reason will be handled through unban requests.
Warnings and Bans
1. I’ve been “Warned” by a moderator. What does that mean?
This means you’ve failed to abide by the rules and regulations of the forums. This isn’t a big deal… everyone makes mistakes. And if you go thirty days without another warning, this one will be erased from history, as if it never happened!
2. I’ve been given a 24-hour ban. What does that mean?
D’oh. This either means that you’ve violated the rules and regulations a second time within thirty days of being warned, or that your violation was so blatantly obvious that the moderators felt an immediate, temporary ban was warranted. You won’t be able to post for 24 hours, and after that you’re on a probationary period of 30 days, plus whatever you had left from the warning period.
3. I’ve been banned permanently! What does that mean?
This means you’ve broken the rules multiple times, or done something ridiculously foolish, like posting a topic filled with nothing but profanity and links to porn sites. You cannot post anymore.
4. I have multiple IPs, and they haven’t all been noted yet, so even though I’m banned, I can still post. Should I?
We wouldn’t recommend it. All this will accomplish is getting those other IPs banned, and making the moderators, admins, and board owner far less sympathetic to your case than they might otherwise be.
5. I seem to be banned, but I don’t know why. Help?
Sometimes we’re required to ban multiple IP addresses to get rid of particularly troublesome offenders. This may be what is affecting you. Please get in touch with the webmaster, and hopefully he’ll help you out.
