In the summer of 1966, Chevrolet General Manager “Pete” E.M. Estes hosted a 14-city conference call (an impressive feat at the time arranged by the Bell system) to discuss the so-called Chevy Panther. It was the car that was to take a stand against the rabid stampede of the Ford Mustang and to everyone’s delight, he announced that GM would begin production of the Panther soon.
Except there was no Panther. The car Estes was there to announce was the Chevy Camaro.
Working names are frequently forgotten, relegated to the dusty corners of old car guys’ brains to be waved about when some young whippersnapper tries to pull rank. SLP (Street Legal Performance) has not forgotten. As it did with the Camaro ZL1 previously, SLP has sifted through the waste bin of GM’s intellectual property to rouse the excitement of muscle-car guys who have been paying attention for 50 years. For good measure, it’s gone ahead and given this “Panther” 600 horsepower to wake up those who haven’t.
