1968 Chevy Camaro by Bo Zolland Heading to 2012 SEMA Show

This year’s SEMA Show is distant on the calendar, but it’s never too early for builders to release sneak previews of what they’re working on.

Swedish car designer Bo Zolland will be putting his spin on a classic 1968 Chevrolet Camaro for this year’s show, and judging by the pictures, it’s going to be a real winner.

‘Trickie Rickie’ wins Gators Pro Mod title

Veteran “Trickie Rickie” Smith raced to his first victory in the NHRA Pro Mod Drag Racing Series presented by ProCare Rx Monday during the rain-delayed Tire Kingdom NHRA Gatornationals.

Smith, a former multi-time winner in NHRA Pro Stock competition, held off event top qualifier Mike Castellana in the final round after defeating Adam Flamholc, Raymond Commisso and Leah Pruett in the first three rounds. In his only other NHRA Pro Mod Drag Racing Series final round appearance, Smith lost to Khalid alBalooshi last spring in Las Vegas.

In the final round at historic Auto-Plus Raceway at Gainesville, Smith powered his trademark red ’68 Camaro past Castellana’s ’68 Camaro with a performance of 5.913 seconds at 240.29 mph. Castellana left the starting line first with an amazing .006 reaction time, but his car got loose near mid-track and slowed to a run of 6.435 at 189.79 mph.

1967 Chevrolet Camaro

The Pro Touring shtick continues to inflame us like the pages of a pulp novel, and from the reports we have written over the past two years there seems no end to it. Indeed, many cars featured on these pages are formulaic, routinely outfitted with the hottest suspension and powertrain modules. People see what the usual suspects are using to win certain categories at Pro Touring festivals and are preternaturally drawn to assume the same build pattern with their own cars.

Steve Martin subscribes to that Pro Touring vibe, too, but as a workingman, his funds weren’t unlimited. So just like most of us would, he did all the work in his home garage, ably abetted by his wife, Linda, and good friend and metal man, Troy. Steve was prolific. He managed everything, save for the interior construction and actual application of paint, in the solace of his man cave. Relationships with a half-dozen F-bodies had prepared him for the mental and physical hit.

Classic pony car gallops to top prize

Chevys “Pony car” Camaros were the subject of more male teenage lust in the 1960s than high school prom queens.

Adding to their allure in the overheated imaginations of a generation of guys who, if they had a prom date at all, likely drove her there in dad’s six-cylinder Nova, was that Camaros were hot numbers that ran with a fast and racy crowd of Mustangs, Firebirds, Barracudas and Javelins that tore up the streets on Saturday night and road courses in Trans-Am events on Sundays.

1968 Chevrolet Camaro vs. 2011 Chevrolet Camaro Comparison Test

Carl Casanova could be both divorced and fired for things he’s done in his modified 1968 Chevrolet Camaro, a car he’s owned for 30 years. We’d guess most of those “things” happened in Casanova’s younger, less cultured days. He is, after all, a family man now.

Casanova’s Camaro isn’t just any car, though. It’s a machine he obsesses over, beats on a racetrack, lovingly rehabilitates and then beats on some more. It has a supercharged 5.7-liter V8 under its hood along with cooling and fuel systems with enough capacity to keep the Camaro running on the hard-boiled racetracks of Southern California. Yes, it’s a very capable track car, one that exhibits equal bits willpower fabrication, ruthless wrench wielding and 3 degrees negative camber at each front wheel. Yes, 3 degrees. If you’re not familiar, that’s a lot.
