Etobicoke drag racer set to take on the world

Jerry Mitrovic didn’t exactly research builders or pour over manufacturers when he needed to build a new Outlaw 10.5-inch tire car for the drag-racing wars in Canada and the U.S.

Neither did the Etobicoke resident import the finest minds in the business for motor tech, nor take time off work to visit any of the famous fabrication labs in the U.S.

Mitrovic relied on his own imagination, and with the help of some local experts, his result is a one-of-a-kind 1969 Camaro-based racer. But even that distinction only begins to define a car that really has no comparison.

Classic pony car gallops to top prize

Chevys “Pony car” Camaros were the subject of more male teenage lust in the 1960s than high school prom queens.

Adding to their allure in the overheated imaginations of a generation of guys who, if they had a prom date at all, likely drove her there in dad’s six-cylinder Nova, was that Camaros were hot numbers that ran with a fast and racy crowd of Mustangs, Firebirds, Barracudas and Javelins that tore up the streets on Saturday night and road courses in Trans-Am events on Sundays.

Classic recollections: 1969 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28

Even as a young boy, Mike Kochanski was infatuated with V-8-powered machines made to move fast.

He regularly walked to a Des Plaines shop, Grand Automotive, to look at and fantasize about the muscle cars on display there, longing for one of his own. Along his well-worn path, he would stroll by a Union 76 gas station where his lifelong passion for Chevrolets sporty Camaro was fanned into flames.

Take a Peek: Inside the 67 Camaro Sales Brochure

Today’s new car brochures might have better photography and fancy gloss covers, but they cant touch the vintage car brochures from the 60s for what you could actually do with them. Back in 67 you could walk into any Chevy dealership, pick out the model you wanted, and ordered pretty much any way you pleased. Want a stripper with a big engine, four-speed, and nothing else? No problem. Want an SS loaded to the gills with options? No problem.

Barrett-Jackson 2012: 1969 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 races across the auction block [w/video]

f youre as excited as we are by the 2012 Chevy Camaro ZL1, it might be wise to understand the historical significance of those three letters at the end of Chevys retrofied muscle car. Way back in 1969 – a year some consider to be the apogee of Camaro history – the automaker built just 69 ZL1s, each powered by an aluminum-block 427-cubic-inch V8 that was otherwise unavailable in the Camaro and built specifically for drag racing.

The 69 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 is highly coveted by collectors, and a perfectly stunning example was auction at the 2012 Barrett-Jackson event in Scottsdale. Though this particular ZL1 saw plenty of use on the drag strip, its been completely restored to like-new condition. We just drove the new 2012 ZL1 full report coming soon, so we were keenly interested in seeing this one cross the auction block. The final bid came in at $410,000, putting the actual sale at $451,000.
