Community helps restore car while Marine deployed
To Staff Sgt. Rockey Crump, the ’76 Camaro was an aging rust-bucket with a lot of potential. For his wife Chrissy and some neighbors in their Chinquapin community, it was a chance to show a deployed Marine some love and appreciation.
Crump, a Motor Transportation specialist with New River’s Marine Wing Support Squadron 276, bought the aging Camaro with his stepfather in 1998 just before he graduated high school, dropping a combined $520 on the purchase. He drove it until engine failure forced him to retire it; and when he joined the Marine Corps he left it behind, rusting to nothing in the woods near his mother’s house.
“He had always talked about, ‘Oh, I wish I could get it remodeled,’” Chrissy said.
